KEEPING
SCORE
Cindy Hong
Cindy,
Cindy, Yvonne (“Yindy”), and I got together recently for an afternoon
of tennis. Except for one of the Cindy's, the rest of us hadn't played
for a while and needed to get back into hitting the ball accurately. So
we started volleying back and forth, a few of the balls going over the
fence, some falling long, some wide, many others not even making it over
the net. Eventually we played a game and the score was only pretty for
two of the four of us. Thankfully for me (as I was one of losing Cindy's),
scoring with God isn't a win-lose proposition as on a tennis court, but
rather a total love affair that brings meaning and purpose and hope for
our lives. While love means squat on the tennis court, it is one of God's
major themes. It was for love that he sent his Son into the world. It
was for love that the Son left home to be with us in this world. It was
for love that he journeyed to the cross. It was for love that he hung
on the cross, bleeding and bearing our sins with holes in his hands and
feet and side. Keeping score with God doesn't mean counting our mistakes,
our mis-hits and mishaps, giving us the score of “Loser!” Not only
would we lose count, but it is also impossible—how in the world can
we score one with the One who sacrificed his Son for us? Even though we
can't keep score, we can still score with God by participating actively
in his unfolding love story in our lives, bringing glory to his reign
in, through, and over us. During this Lenten season as we journey to the
cross with Jesus, may our love for him abound more and more in depth and
breadth, overwhelming us so that we cannot but respond by loving him with
our whole being. Perhaps the winning game God has called us to play in
life is to love him deeply and love others loyally. Score!
