Test
of Character Pastor William Hsue
“
If you faint
in the day of adversity, your strength is small.” Proverb 24:10
While
driving south on Beltway 8 toward Hobby airport yesterday, I saw house
after house with blue tarps on their roofs. Some of us also have damaged
roofs or collapse ceilings. Many of us lived without electricity for days
or weeks. We've all seen pictures of the lonely house on the beach, all
its neighbors blown away by the storm. Yet many of the oil drill platforms
remained intact. Those fortunate
enough with underground electric lines had power. While hurricanes can
cause damage to any structure, it will especially reveal the weak spots
of our houses: roofs, electrical wires, and foundation.
And
so it is with our lives as well. During those trying and stressful
moments, will it reveal the strength of our faith or its lack? We build
character during the ordinary moments of life, but the true test of our
character comes when we face stress and hardships ?
